Summary/Abstract: Gibraltar is the best-known British Overseas Territory, a unique relic of the British colonial empire, which once extended to the entire world. The study presents the history of Gibraltar, its place and importance within the colonial empire, its sovereignty dispute with Spain and the local self-determination issues. Interest in the territory has been boosted in the wake of the 2016 Brexit vote because as a result of the decision, this territory neighbouring Spain will leave the European Unit, along with the United Kingdom. The paper reviews the possible implications of Gibraltar’s exit from the EU and the Single Market.
