Summary/Abstract: Fires had been one of the most serious threats to cities for centuries. That is why, the municipal authorities undertook measures to enhance fire safety. This required proper care for respecting the previously adopted legislation and, at the same time, its constant modification in virtue of the urban and spatial development of the city. The Author presents systematic activities taken by the regional authorities in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth not only in the construction of fire-fighting structures, care for supplies of fire-fighting equipment, rich and rational fire-fighting legislation, but also concerning dissemination of knowledge about fire safety rules among residents. The article also presents the steps that municipal authorities took after extinguishing actions.
