Summary/Abstract: In the Church acolytes were known almost from the beginning. In the third century they were included into the clerical state. Pope Caius listed them among the hierarchy of the Church. Thereafter, Pope Siricius described the rules associated with stages and levels ascending to Holy Orders indicating that the acolyte is one of the routes towards priesthood. The acolyte ceased to be that of minor orders in 1972 under the Ministeria quaedam by Pope Paul VI. From that moment, the Pope decided that acolyte will be called a “ministry”. Although it was for men not only solely reserved for those candidates preparing for Holy Orders. The Pope’s disposition was included in the 1983 Code of Canon Law. The main duty of the acolyte is to attend to the service of the altar and to assist deacon and the priest in liturgical celebration. Acolyte is also the extraordinary minister of the Holy Communion.
