Summary/Abstract: This article focuses on the understanding and legitimacy of the so called child’s right to an open future. This right entails a moral obligation of the child’s caregivers to refrain from any actions which could prevent the child from exercising any of those rights in the future and the obligation to act in a way which will enable the child to take advantage of those rights in the future. In practice, it means both imposing certain forms of what is considered to be beneficial behavior on the child, and forbidding those which are considered to be harmful. The article argues that the efforts to provide the child with an open future are affected by the following three factors: (1) the intellectual level of the caregivers; (2) the type of emotional sensitivity represented by the caregivers; (3) the caregivers’ conscience.
