Summary/Abstract: At the beginning of the article the author describes Japanese isolationism and successful process of modernization and westernization which began in Japan in 1868, then goes to situation of Korea in the second half of the nineteenth century – its openness to the world and the modernization from the years 1897–1910. In the next part of the article readers will find out about Russo-Japanese War which took place in 1904–1905. Events from 1905 and 1910 are presented later and at the end the of the article the author summarizes Korean history in the twentieth century.
