Summary/Abstract: The publication is devoted to the analysis of works of painting andgraphics of the last quarter of the 18th century – the middle of the 19thcentury as a historical sources. One of the problem of these sources isthe determination of authorship and the accordance of the plots to thehistorical reality that they reflect. It is noted that during the last quarter of the 18th – middle of the 19thcentury a unique array of visual sources was created, which showsthe history of the Northern Black Sea region. In particular, it is notedthat most of the work was created by painters of expeditions, artistsand travelers from nature. In addition, there were those who, not havingthe opportunity to visit the region, but having a desire to illustratetheir publications with the North Black Sea region views, resort tocompilations or based on the minimum of information, they were inventingplots. These sources have never been analyzed for the plot’saccordance to the historical reality that it portrays.Identifying ways to compile and construct historical reality in theseworks is relevant, since most works of painting and graphics are an integralpart of many scientific and popular science research. The aim ofthis article is to resolve the authenticity and accordance to the historicalrealities of some works of painting and graphics of the last quarterof the 18th – middle of the 19th century. To achieve the purpose of thepublication, comparative and attribution methods were used.201After analyzing about 2000 plots, which depicts the historical realityof the Northern Black Sea region, there are three ways in which theauthors compiled stories or depicted imaginary species of the region. These include, firstly, the formation of the plot due to the elements ofengravings that were created from the fieldwork. Secondly, the creationof conditional reality based on oral tradition and author’s imagination.Thirdly, «modernization» of real images of authors drawingfrom nature in the region. In the conclusions it is noted that in Western Europe there was ademand for visual information from the Northern Black Sea region, sothe artists, unabled to visit the region, resorted to compilations andgraphic modernizations of the already created and well-known plotsfrom nature. The selection of elements by illustrators of compilationand modernization is an important source for exploring the image ofthe Northern Black Sea region and the persistent perceptual stampsthat emerged in the middle of the 19th century.
