Summary/Abstract: The main aim of this article is analysis of John Paul II’s perception of such categories as nation, homeland, patriotism and national identity. The essay is composed of three parts. The first one points the far-reaching connection between the historical experiences of the Polish nation, where the Pope was originated from, elements of Karol Wojtyła’s biography and the fundamental message as well as socio-political approach of the 264th Bishop of Rome’s pontificate. In the second part – the key for this subject – the title’s concepts were characterized on the basis of the homilies, occasional speeches, and above all – the content of the last book of John Paul II – Memory and identity: conversations at the dawn of a millennium. Finally, the third, complementary part of the article includes an innovative and comparative approach to the views of Polishness and Poles by the successors of John Paul II – Popes Benedict XVI and Francis, as well as political science’s digressions to the most current events, such as the canonization of the Polish Pope.
