Summary/Abstract: Concerning the importance of infrastructure activities for the functioning of overall economy and for the living standard, as well as a constantly growing demand for their services, this paper is aimed at analyzing the role of the private sector in financing economic infrastructure development. Until recently, infrastructure activities were under complete state control. Political interference and the absence of market principles caused greater inefficiency and reduction of accumulation, which resulted in the ineptitude of this sector to meet the growing demand for infrastructure services. Instead of directy managing the infrastructure enterprises, the state - in order to secure its continuous development - embarks on liberalization and commercialization of infrastructure activities. Engaging the private capital in activities of general economic interest in the Balkan countries in transition implies prior changes in price policy, the restructuring of infrastructure enterprises, and a precise definition of the role of regulatory bodies.
