Summary/Abstract: The authoress analyses Wes Anderson's short film Hotel Chevalier and a film which is, in some ways, its sequel – The Darjeeling Limited. The analysis proves that there are many links between the two films in terms of storytelling and creative strategy, which are primarily based on the tension between chaos and control. The authoress of the text describes the attitude of the main characters at the beginning of The Darjeeling Limited in order to indicate the transformation they undergo during their journey. Eventually the Whitman brothers let some chaos into their orderly life and as a result they manage to help each other deal with the traumatic loss of their father, a sense of failure and the feeling of not belonging. By combining the elements of different movie genres – the adventure movie and the road movie together with original approach, the Texan director initiates many possible contexts of interpretation. The authoress briefly discusses the most important ones – social, biographical and political. She also reflects upon the psychological and cultural aspect of The Darjeeling Limited. Anderson's autobiographical approach to filmmaking allows the authoress to portray the director as a homo aestheticus, which, according to Jean-Jacques Wunenburger's definition, refers to expressing his inner experiences and imagination, which results in creating a work that is an objectivisation and an expansion of pure subjectivity at the same time. This observation is the key to understanding and accepting the deliberately over-aestheticised visual layer of his films.
