Summary/Abstract: In the settlement of Năeni-Zănoaga (county Buzău), a fragmentary decorated stone axe was discovered in layer Zănoaga IIa, characterized by pottery of the Monteoru Ic4-1 style. A sample of radiocarbon dated animal bones from the same layer has been analyzed, Beta-176781, giving a date of 3740±60 BP. The axe has analogies in shape and decoration in the Circumpontic region. The ornamentation is similar with some elements found on two pieces discovered in Bulgaria, at Brestak and Momchilgrad, while the shape of the axes has parallels with many axes, especially from the distribution area of the Multi-Roller Pottery (Mnogovalikovaya) culture. However, the axes from “Treasure L” from Troy seem closer and more important, as well as those from the Borodino treasure/hoard. Judging by the radiocarbon dates from Monteoru Culture sites characterized by pottery of the styles Ic4-Ic3, the layer Zănoaga IIa and the axe-fragment can be dated to the period 2400-2200 BC, a date which would, generally, correspond to the dating of “Treasure L” from Troy.
