Summary/Abstract: The Revolutionary year 1989 has swept across Europe, from the fall of the Berlin Wall in the GDR, extending the Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Poland, and Hungary, where the communists were removed from power by relatively peaceful events. Romania will experience the bloodiest end of the communist regime, because Nicolae Ceausescu surrounded himself by a state apparatus, whose representatives did not have the courage to say anything against him.
