Summary/Abstract: In this contribution we analyze some metaphorical uses of Italian and Spanish deictic motion verbs. They are organized according to their degree of abstraction: from the meanings in which the value of displacement is still clearly identified up to those in which the metaphorization has projected the deictic and actional features of the basic meaning into semantic branches of temporal, resultative type, etc. We present a compilation of the imaginary and abstract uses with active deictic features. A contrastive study between Spanish and Italian shows the similarities and differences between the metaphorical uses of the two pairs of verbs and the analogies in the processes of abstraction underlying the new meanings. The examples have been interpreted and categorized according to the concepts and models of cognitive linguistics.
