Summary/Abstract: There have always been misunderstandings when talking about the attitude in front of the sacred character of images adopted by the western Church in comparison to the Byzantine one. This article is an attempt to clarify four questions which are significant for the understanding of the evolution of the way of perceiving images during the Middle Ages: the mental image and the artificial image, the image as a Bible of the illiterate, the relation between word and image and the image seen as historia.
