ROLE OF LITERARY TEXTS IN CULTURAL ACTIVITIES OF PEOPLE’S HOUSES

Summary/Abstract: Movement of Turkism, which left its mark on last years of Ottoman State, brought a lot of studies about Turkish culture with it and these studies become a national policy after proclamation of the republic. As a matter of fact, for this purpose, some new institutions and organizations including Turkish Historical Society, Turkish Language Association and People’s Houses were constituted. Among these organizations, particularly People’s Houses carried out multi-directional studies for promoting Turkish language, history, geography and culture, and played a big role in strengthening national identity of Turkishness in Turkey and getting modern life rules adopt.While People’s Houses, through its branches of Language – Literature, History – Museum, Library and Publication, were trying to raise the folk’s knowledge and cultural level about Turkish language and Turkish history, to improve love of homeland and sense of citizenship, to reveal and to publish cultural values, linguistic elements and pure Turkish words, which sunk into oblivion, and to include these in daily life, its representative branches were presenting to the folk by re-writing the Turk’s high moral, customs and traditions, and heroics in various Turkish epics as stage play. Again, on this stage plays, consciousness of Turkishness, Turkish nation’s origins, Central Asian Turks’ life’s, their immigrations from their homeland, their wars, inscriptions, states by them, civilizations by them were mentioned; Turkish elders who steered history were brought into the forefront and were associated to history of the republic. Besides, including honesty concept, woman-man relationships were proposed an item for the agenda, and examples were presented on habits which were requested to be removed or to be fulfilled.
