Summary/Abstract: Over the past years, several new realization possibilities to implement virtualized computer network environments have been developed. Besides testbeds, they can be differentiated in simulators and emulators. High practical relevance and functional realism can be achieved using network emulation. However, these tools are complex to setup and maintain, e.g., in laboratory environments of universities. This paper evaluates state-of-the-art network emulation tools for computer networking courses and research projects in the Network Laboratory (NetLab) of Fulda University of Applied Sciences. Special focus is drawn on the scalability for large numbers of students, low administrative effort and costs, high practical use of the supported laboratory exercises and corresponding educational requirements.
