Summary/Abstract: The paper aims to analyze the software engineering challenges in a trans-disciplinary academic project for creating an integrated software system for education and scientific research - the NBU e-platform in teaching foreign languages for specific purposes. All phases of the software life cycle are discussed in the context an exploratory product development. The architecture of the system is presented in detail, including the underlying technologies, the architectural pattern, the class hierarchy and the data base structure. Further, the concept of integration with the existing e-learning platform of the university is justified. The results of the first three months operations are analyzed. Finally, the lessons learned during this trans-disciplinary academic project are summarized.
