Summary/Abstract: Like any elite, during World War I Romanian Transylvanian teachers were active both on the battlefield and on the home front, wavering between civil duty and the national ideal. The teachers in Făgăraș și Sibiu, the comitates close to the border to Romania, that had strong traditions in the national movement, had to suffer the most from it. The survey conducted by ASTRA in 1922 can provide valuable data about the social phenomena during World War I. The case study dedicated to the teaching staff points out the favourable destiny of this elite in the context of the war and its status in the rural milieu at the beginning of the 20th century.
