Summary/Abstract: The Eastern question originated, developed and was gradually resolved when the Europeans resisted and managed to keep the Ottoman Empire away. Rivalry between the European powers delayed the end of the Ottoman Empire until the point when they could reach an agreement on how to divide the great Ottoman inheritance in Europe.
