Summary/Abstract: The author of this article discusses the place and role of the noble estate in the life of towns in the region in question. He focuses on both its members who arrived in towns for their temporary stay and those who were their permanent residents. It was the latter who in particular actively participated in the life of towns, primarily in their econo¬my, running numerous businesses and managing financial operations, lending money and taking fiscal obligations. Also, they often held offices as administrators in private towns, as well as vogts (Pol. wójt) and landed vogts in royal towns. Mutual relations with representa¬tives of townspeople led to multiple clashes and conflicts, provoked by both parties, yet the nobles were predominant. In the same way relations with Jews were shaped. A large number of examples of such conflicts were presented in this work. Also, the circumstances of migrations of the nobility to towns, both the royal and private ones, were shown, as well as their activity and the reluctant stance on the local townsmen.
