Summary/Abstract: The article concerns the property holdings of nobility in the royal city of Sandomierz. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the gentry and magnates aggres¬sively bought up property within the city walls and in the suburbs of many cities. The income received by cities from taxation decreased because the property taken over by the nobility was exempt from taxes. The owners of the Sandomierz city property were the burgraves of the Sandomierz castle (Jakub Lipnicki, Wojciech Pirocki, Jan Kozłowski) and representatives of the Krzyżanowski, Leszczyński, Miękicki, Milejowski, Oleśnicki, Podłęski, Sieniawski, Sienieński, Słupecki, Słupski, Tarłówski and Tarnowski families.Another issue is the advancement of Sandomierz bourgeoisie into the noble stratum since, in the period under discussion, some patrician families had gained nobility. The way to social advancement was through royal or magnate service, economic activity, broad commercial contacts, higher education and its prestige, as well as through family ties, especially marriage with a noble person. Most of the townspeople who entered the noble state owed it to the favourable economic situation in the city which allowed them to grow wealthy. They engaged in the rafting of grain, agricultural and forestry products, received income from their own properties, and earned money form various kinds of lease: from lucrative city estates and businesses, to the real estate which belonged to ecclesiastical in¬stitutions. Several citizens of Sandomierz, for example Jan Zamoyski, earned their nobility through service for the King and the magnates.Although several families of Sandomierz bourgeoisie used noble titles, only four of them are confirmed in the records of the Crown Register, namely, Bartłomiej Serny and his sons (1581), medic Stanisław Bartolon (1590), Stanisław Szlachetka Nagórski (1590), and Wojciech, Grandson of Słowieński, Lokator of Zamość (1591).
