Summary/Abstract: The political repression of the Great Terror cost the lives of three-quarters of a million innocent people, while hundreds of thousands of others were subject to prison or correctional labour camps. Among those executed were hundreds of Czechs, Czechoslovak citizens and inhabitants of the Czech lands. The largest mass execution of persons of Czech origin on the territory of the USSR took place on St. Wenceslas’ Day, 28 September, 1938 in Zhytomyr. On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of those executions we are reprinting editorially revised selected chapters from the book Zatajené popravy (Secret Executions) by the late historian Mečislav Borák. The text is supplemented by archival documents acquired from archives in Ukraine.
