Summary/Abstract: As a great pianist and teacher Artur Schnabel developed a highly individual and complex approach to scorereading, articulation, interpretation and problems of sonority and technique. His metrical solutions call for more intense concentration on score analysis, as well as to different attitude toward sonorities. In this paper, we will discuss some parts of Schnabel’s teaching regarding this matter, particularly its pragmatic use of analysis that is more performanceoriented. Apart from that, the ways in which “performance” can reflect, reflect upon and inspire analytical statements will be considered and then some implications of such an approach will be summarised.
