Summary/Abstract: Diplomatic and trade negotiations involve the adjustment of complex parameters and above all basic awareness that understanding is in fact “a variant of misunderstanding” (A. Culioli). This misunderstanding stems from the structure of language, which can tell us about customs, but only in missing the point, as different languages refer to different “worlds”. The article explores this divergence of references by sketching a history of globalization.
