Family and Social Capital. Selected Theoretical and Research Problems

Summary/Abstract: In the article the attention is focused on the family as a source of social capital. The article presents some defning and research problems concerning the functioning of social capital in the context of changes in the bonds within a family, in its structure and relationships. The frst part depicts the place the family occupies in the theory and typology of social capital, in particular in the division into bonding and bridging social capital. The next partis devoted to the conceptualisation of the family’s social capital. Special attention has been paid to the diversifcation of the access to social resources within a family. The last part of the article describes the relations between socio-cultural changes and social capital; this time special attention is paid to the changes in family life patterns and their signifcance to the resources of social capital.
