Summary/Abstract: Marcus Caelius Rufus (82–48 BC), who was an equite, a politician and an orator during the times of late Roman Republic, was also known by ancient writers as a very complex persona. His biography and cursus honorum also arouse historians’ interest today. There are still some significant debates amongst scholars concerning Caelius’ date of birth, place of birth, his quaestory, pretury and his connections with Caesar. This article is a reconstruction of Caelius’ biography and also includes disputed issues. The author presents facts from Caelius’ life chronologically, discusses equites’ political sympathies, follows his complicated career path and attempts to answer questions about reasons of his controversial political decisions. Presented article is the first polish comprehensive biography of Marcus Caelius Rufus.
