Summary/Abstract: Metaphors are proper rather for common parlance than for the language of a science. In my paper I present some thoughts on a place of figurative expressions in texts from the area of social sciences. What kind of functions metaphors – applied in sociological reflection – could perform? I examine spatial metaphors analyzed by Stanisław Ossowski in his writings on social structure. Can these metaphors be treated as scientific notions? Ossowski is making a specific deconstruction of spatial metaphors which are (and were) commonly used in studies and theoretical concepts concerning the social structure. First of all, the notion „social structure” is also the metaphorical expression. While analyzing the social structure issues we admittedly use the terms referring to spatial relationships – but these are only metaphors.
