Discursive and Textual Divergences in French Translations of Titles of Lusophone Novels

Summary/Abstract: The first contact of the reader with a translated work might seem similar to the contact with the original work. The title, cover and back cover are factors which affect the expectation line of the reader, influence the way one reads the work, and even determine whether the book is purchased or not. We wonder how the translators read, interpret and render these elements. Do they aim at the same kind of audience? Do they provide clues similar to those given in the original work? Or do they adapt to a more or less wide audience, facilitating or hindering its entry in the text? The translation of these elements, then, emerged as a way to access the text and creates a reading pact. Translators must take into account the type of audience for whom the original text is intended, trying to recreate the same horizon of expectations for the public of the translated work.
