Summary/Abstract: Our case study presents the system of ethnic classification of an ethnically mixed Transylvanian village. In the first part of our paper we discuss how macro-structural changes affected the situation of the Roma and non-Roma and how they shaped the system of ethnic classification. We argue that macro-processes led to an increasing ethnicization of the local social differences and to a growing significance and political salience of the distinction between Roma and non-Roma. However, one cannot understand properly the functioning of the ethnic classificatory system through focusing exclusively on structural constrains. The second section of our paper focuses on the strategies of the Roma elites and mobile Roma. We also try to present the functioning of the institutions and actors interested in the creation of group cohesion and reproduction of the internal solidarity of the Roma at the local level.
