Summary/Abstract: Our study presents the changing system of ethnic classification in a Transylvanian village, which is mixed considering the ethnic origin of its inhabitants; however, it is homogeneously Hungarian considering language use. We focus on the distinction and ethnic boundary making between Roma and non-Roma. One of our arguments is that the cleavages of the local society have ethnicized due to several macro-structural and macro-societal processes, which led to an increased significance of the distinction between Roma and non-Roma. Nevertheless, our focus is not exclusively on structural constrains but also on the role of human agency. We present the strategies and identity options of socially mobile Roma who try to distance themselves from the Roma category in order to escape the social stigma associated with it.
