Summary/Abstract: The present study aims to highlight the general characteristics of the Romanian nobility from Maramureș during the reign of Matthias Corvinus (1458-1490), by examining the most important noble families from Maramureș, the offices held by them, their properties, their contribution to the military expeditions of the king, the privileges received from the sovereign, the evolution of the local institutions linked to the life of the elites and the frequency of the use of the ethnonym Romanian. The comparison with the situation of the nobility from the Banat and Hunedoara-Hațeg helps understanding the characteristics from Maramureș and placing the local nobility into the political and social setting of the kingdom. Identifying the individuals who held offices in Maramureș and the references about the survival of the Romanian institutions helps acknowledging their social status and the process of adapting to the structural transformations in the realm. Verifying the assertions of Romanian historians who wrote about the subject is another purpose of the present analysis.
