Summary/Abstract: The article considers the question of continuity in the development of Russian statehood between the Russian monarchy and the Soviet state on the material of the armed forces. Historical conditions associated with the social structure of the country and a continuation of the First world war forced the Bolshevik party after coming to power, to abandon the concept of replacement of the standing army universal arming of the people. The Worker-Peasant Red army was the continued development of the armed forces identified in the course of military reform in the mid-nineteenth century. These traits of continuity with the Imperial army can be traced in all areas of her life and combat activities. They are largely connected with the assimilation of the experience of the First world war in the new social, political, and ideological conditions.
