Summary/Abstract: The importance of rankings and mergers of the higher education worldwide is constantly growing. Developing academic perfection programs and islands of excellence leads to sustaining very competitive group of elite universities called World Class Universities. Consolidation is one of the most common ways of creating or strengthening such universities and improving their positions in international rankings. A hypothesis can be stated that consolidation processes are directly linked to international university rankings in numerous countries. Rapid rise in importance of international university rankings stimulated the development of consolidation processes in the science and higher education sector. However, university's position in the rankings is an artificial and instrumental measure that should not be the main reason for mergers decisions. More important are the organic causes, i.e. the complementarity of the university allowing for synergies in scientific, didactic and implementation activities.
