Spatial organization of traditional Muslim cities: Case of Tlemcen in Algeria

Summary/Abstract: Tlemcen is a city built during the Muslim period. Through this article we want to confirm the obedience of spatial organization to the theoretical model of Muslim cities. This study will involve the analysis of the configuration and the functioning of the city by seeking the three principles of composition of the Muslim medinas which are the centrality, the hierarchy and the uniqueness at the level of the free and built spaces. The comparison of the theoretical urban elements with those of Tlemcen, allowed us to confirm that Tlemcen is a typical Muslim city which is characterized by a Muslim urbanism of the Middle Ages.
