Summary/Abstract: Based on the analysis of Diary of Old Age and Vladimir Propp’s letters to his friend Victor Shabunin, the article attempts to define not only the circle of the scholar‘s readings, but also his strategy of reading and evaluating books. His choices are far from systematic. He reaches both for the texts present to him „contemplative and savory durability” (Barthes’ definition), and for those that impressed him with sincerity and authenticity, as well as those that fit into the circle of his sublime interests.
