Summary/Abstract: The events of the Mongol invasion of Hungary and the battle by the Sajó River have been reconstructed on the basis of written sources. New excavations enabled a fresh analysis of this period in the light of the archaeological evidence. The study reviews and evaluates the latest data on the destruction of the country, the transformation of the settlement structure, the castle-building activity, the legacy of the Cumans and Iasians. The results of the excavations can also support the localization of the site of the Battle of the Sajó River and help critically interpret the written sources on the Mongol invasion.
