Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses obligatoriness as a criterion that can be applied for distinguishing between what is grammatical and what is not in a language. This criterion is essential for providing evidence in the study of the grammaticalisation processes that nominal phrases containing edin, edna, edno, edni have been undergoing within the category of indefiniteness. Three types of restrictions on obligatoriness – lexicosemantic, intraparadigmatic and contextual – are reviewed. These restrictions are illustrated with ample examples extracted from three corpora of the Bulgarian language and the Internet.
