Summary/Abstract: Thrace was the first European theme, established about 680 for counteraction against the Bulgarians. In the period between 789-802 within the limits of Thrace a new theme– Macedonia – was created. Seals, including the Hermitage ones, belong to numerous officials of both themes: strategoi, judges, tourmarhes, etc. Both themes were closely connected with each other, which came into full play in the XIth century: the seals name different high mainly civil officials who administered the union of Thrace and Macedonia. The article is devoted to the seals unknown before. Among them are the seals of Christophore, spatharios and episkeptites of Macedonia (late 11th century); Ваrdzahamis?, imperial spatharokandidatos and chartoularios of Macedonia (10th/11th century); Nikephoros, patrikios and strategos of Macedonians (late 8th century);…imperial protospatharios and judge of Macedonia (10th century); George Tzykandyles?, protoanthypatos and strategos of Thrace (late 11th century); Nicholas, imperial strator and tourmarches of Thrace and Macedonia (first half of the 9th century); George, imperial spatharios and strategos of Thrace and Macedonia (10th century). These seals open new pages in the history of both themes.
