Summary/Abstract: With the end of World War I in the fall of 1918 the multiethnic Habsburg empire collapsed, and the emperor resigned from his duties as a head of state. From this arose the new state “Deutschösterreich”, formally established on October 30, 1918, followed by the declaration of the “Demokratische Republik Deutschösterreich” (democratic republic of German Austria) on November 12, 1918. Based on legal sources, this article illustrates the relation between the federal state and its provinces directly before and after the state´s foundation.
