Summary/Abstract: This article presents typical hospitals’ problem – medical equipment management (most of all – identification of this equipment) and the estimated costs associated with these problems. Systems that enable the identification of medical equipment in hospitals and the benefits that hospitals may obtain due to the use of these systems are also presented. The above issue was presented in relation to staffing shortages, especially among nurses. Staff shortages begin to be visible in the Polish health care system. The projections of the changes concerning the number of nurses were presented as well as their impact on the applicability of the RFID system (Radio-Frequency Identification) in combination with RTLS system (Real-Time Locating Systems) to assist in the management of medical equipment in hospitals. Application of the above systems would in fact increase patient safety and reduce the burden on the staff related to unnecessary work of the identification and search for medical devices and thus would result in substantial financial savings.
