Legitimation Strategies of Education Reform in Discourse on 6-year Old Children. The Case of MEN Promotional Campaign

Summary/Abstract: RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The main objective of the article is to use the category of legitimation in order to analyze a piece of discourse dedicated to education reform efforts targeted at lowering educational age. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: the research problem concerns the question of which legitimation strategies of education reform could be identified with an analyzed piece of discourse on reform. In this article, the main argumentative lines of educational reform proponents are identified. The discourse analysis is used according to Michaela Schwab-Trapp’s concept. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The first section begins with the discussion about interdisciplinary tools in an educational oriented discourse analysis. The second shows different approaches to the conception of legitimation and it explains how researchers will use the the conception of legitimation for discourse analysis with the focus on Michaela Schwab-Trapp’s concept. The last part offers the example of the use of Schwab-Trapp’s concept for public discourse on education reform targeted at lowering school age. RESEARCH RESULTS: In the discourse analysis, four legitimation strategies of education reform and their ideal contexts are discussed. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The category of legitimation can be an useful tool of educational discourse analysis. In particular, it can help conduct research on legitimation strategies towards education reforms.
