Summary/Abstract: RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the article is looking at the ability of decentration as one of the necessary competences in the modern world from the developmental perspective. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The ability to decenter has been characterised for each stage of development of self within the R. Kegan’s concept of development of self. Educational implications resulting from these characteristics were presented too. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Functioning of a human in a stormy environment means constant readiness to react to changes. Education can be understood as adapting to the change, the acceptance of change is the precursory (necessary) requirement of development (advancement) of the man and society. Among many concepts of development, one particularly useful to our debate is the R. Kegan’s concept of development of self, in which decentration is the key category. On the basis of analyses conducted, implications for education were drawn. RESEARCH RESULTS: Decentration, which is the ability to distance oneself from given fragments of reality (differing from it and going beyond), is the key competence in the dynamically changing (developing) world. The R. Kegan’s concept used in the article points to show how this competence can be developed in education. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: We advocate the support for decentration through education of children and the youth from the youngest age. What is useful in this area is the integral education which assumes the versatile and progressive development of human. It is equally important that human who stopped at a given development level of self, had a chance, through supportive education, to develop further to higher levels.
