Summary/Abstract: Well-tempered poet and atypical prose writer of the period between the two World Wars, indebted to expressionist, neo-romantic and symbolist formulae, H.Bonciu engendered a criticism whose verdicts happened to be divergent. The present study, as a rereading of an expressionist novel, Bagaj... (published in 1934), explores two distinct figures: the Hero and the Antihero (with some of the alterations involved within the paradigm of Modernism). Beyond the absurd philosophy, the grotesque characters and certain technical elements that belong to the so-called ‘New Objectivity’, the novel could be understood as a source of heroism. Famous figures in Bagaj... – as those who represent Vienna fin de siècle –reconfigure the modern discourse on Heroes and Antiheroes.
