Summary/Abstract: The article describes the sources of European identity. It describes the theory of human mitochondrial DNA and the seven mothers of the population of the present-day Europe. It concludes with an outlook of the mitochondrial mothers of Europe heritage. It also describes in a synthetic form the symbolic sources of identity, like ancient Greek philosophy, Roman law, Christian religion, barbarian aspects of civilisation and the Age of Enlightenment.
