Summary/Abstract: One of the main problems of SMEs is that they do not rethink business strategies. Innovation allows you to improve your skills applied in these strategies. It is important to know the situation of these companies, regarding innovation. The objective is to make a diagnosis of the situation of SMEs, with respect to innovation as a competitive tool. We carry out two types of investigations; one bibliographic and another –descriptive-quantitative. A questionnaire, consisting of 4 blocks: vision of innovation, innovation strategy, human resources and innovation and organization for innovation, was applied to 145 companies representing 62% of SMEs registered in CANACO-SERVITUR-Guaymas. The results, among others are: 41% try to create innovative culture, 11.61% want to update themselves in innovation, 63.75% do not consider innovating, 8.27% transmit values, 3.44% study the market and competition, 17.24% anticipate some changes, 33.10% occasionally talk about the term, 15.86%, know little, 22.06% do not know about innovation, 31.03% associate technology with innovation, 60% do not know the term, 82% do not cooperate with other organizations. We can conclude that SMEs Guaymenses are aware that their competitiveness lies in improving strategies, but not to admit that the environment is changing, review strategies and do not need to innovate. It is necessary to support them that they can contribute in the economy and generation of jobs.
