Summary/Abstract: The Greek equivalent of the Bulgarian “Shliokavitsa”, called Greeklish, is the Greek language written with the Latin alphabet. The phenomenon refers to ad-hoc practices of writing Greek text in different informal environments, especially in electronic media. The paper discusses parallels between the Greek and the Bulgarian practices of writing with Latin alphabet, typical for the youth sociolects in these two Balkan countries. It presents in short the history, the basic characteristics of Greeklish, some of its uses and current trends.
