Summary/Abstract: The concept of key competences in practice is considered to be one of the most important strategies of competitive struggle. Properly implemented it allows to use own potential in the most optimal way. It is emphasized that key competences can be analyzed from different perspectives, approaches, including that from the point of view of specific groups of enterprises. In this paper, the aim is to identify and evaluate the key competences of family businesses, assuming that these enterprises are characterized by certain, unique advantages. The paper is of theoretical and empirical nature. The theoretical part was based on the analysis of Polish and English bibliography and the empirical part on the basis of surveys which were carried out on a sample of 76 entities representing family businesses. The analysis done allowed to state that the majority of competences of family enterprises are of standard character, related to the quality of manufactured products or services provided as well as related to the image of the company and partner relations with the contractors. A number of competences have been identified that are specific for this group of entities: high work culture, professional approach to the buyer, openness and flexibility and involvement of owners in achieving the goals.
