Summary/Abstract: For an enterprise the ability to survive is one of the critical measures of its potential for growth, with this ability being dependent on a number of factors, both internal and external. Ensuring its persistence and continuity of operations while maintaining adequate effectiveness is what managers and owners of the vast majority of enterprises strive for. The paper made an attempt to leave behind those patterns to analyzed and compared the survival rate of family and non-family enterprises. The hypothesis was tested as to the family businesses having a higher capacity to survive than the non-family ones. The analyses were based on the findings of a retrospective study on the sample of enterprises from Lesser Poland Voivodship. The analyses employed models of event history analysis. The multidimensional analysis with Cox’s semiparametric model was preceded by a one-dimensional analysis using Kaplan-Meier nonparametric life-tables. The results of the analyses did not confirm the advantage of family enterprises over non-family enterprises in terms of their survival rate.
