Summary/Abstract: Among the fundamental changes that occurred in our country on the turn of the 80s and 90s of the 20th century, the transformation of the concept to assure the external security of the state gained an important position. In the unstable and not fully defined international situation, different ideas of creation of global and regional security emerged. Particularly in relation to Middle-Eastern Europe a vast array of possibilities was examined: from preservation of the Warsaw Pact in a slightly changed formula to leaving the states of the region out of any security structure. According to these ideas the Polish military (unlike the political class) tried to build an external security system of the state within the frame of the imposed autarky. The most interesting without doubt was the self-sufficient defense strategy, also named the all-azimuth defense concept. Such consideration was put to an end by the declaration of the possibility of NATO broadening, which made an open road for Poland to joining NATO.
