Summary/Abstract: In the EU programming period of 2014-2020, Hungary’s largest transportation development project, the building of an intermodal passenger terminal (IPT) will be implemented in Debrecen. As a result of the project all passenger transportation modes (e.g., railway, long-distance and local bus transportation, trolley, tram, and taxi) will be integrated under the roof of the IPT, which will contain parking spaces for cars and bicycles as well. Parallel with the IPT project significant urban planning actions will be implemented in the city. One of these actions will be the redevelopment of the underused Petőfi square, lying between the IPT and the city centre, to a vital public space. Relating to the IPT develop-ment several feasibility studies and sustainability analysis have been worked out; however, the impact of the IPT on the development of Debrecen has not been examined. In this paper we focus on detecting how the IPT project might influence the position of Debrecen in its region and affect the development and the everyday life of the city.
