Summary/Abstract: Food safety is one of the priorities of the European Union. In order to ensure that a level of consumer protection in all Member States is uniform, Union-wide regulations (including the most important rules on food quality and safety) have been implemented. Together with them, in 2002, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) was established. EFSA provides scientific advisory, as well as scientific and technical support in the field of Community legislation and policy in all areas that have a direct or indirect impact on food and feed safety. It issues opinions on existing and emerging food-related hazards, which are then included in the EU rules and principles. The Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) also plays an important role in ensuring food safety. The task of this system is to collect and then quickly disseminate information about food products, feed and materials and articles intended for contact with food that pose a threat to human or animal health. The aim is to prevent the introduction of dangerous food to the EU market and, if necessary, withdrawal of such food products as soon as possible.
